The Observer is an accessible student-run forum for informed discussion and engagement with diverse perspectives on a wide array of topics in global affairs. The Observer aims to promote awareness of international affairs among the student body by providing a platform for students to contribute to well-researched public discourse, sharing insights that matter to our academic community and that aim to go beyond mainstream news coverage. We seek to connect academic perspectives with real-world events in order to build a bridge between global and local politics.
The Observer’s Print Branch publishes and prints quarterly editions engaging with recent events in the international space. Each issue features a central theme, past themes include “Forgotten Stories of the Global South” with stories covering Alaskan political pluralism and Kenya’s MSS mission in Haiti, and “Technocratic Traditions” with stories covering digital sovereignty and the rise of AI security states.
Our newly developed Online Branch is dedicated to investigative student journalism, with articles covering topics from relevant departments on campus year-round. Our writers conduct on-the-ground campus research and investigation – pressing international challenges are brought from global to local and researched by our staff writers, investigated, and discussed with experts such as professors or on-campus researchers to present pressing issues through original perspectives to the QIAA & Queen’s community.
