Overview
A growing initiative for
QIAA, the production of highly informative publications
designed to be as useful as they are educational, will be a
highlight of the coming academic year. Our two publications,
the
Queen's International Observer and the

Issue 1:
Globalization: A Necessary Enemy or Undesirable Friend?

Globalization is an ancient phenomenon that continues to
bind our world closer. Permeating through our daily lives,
it uses almost every channel – from the faster airplane to
the faster Internet connection to bring ‘foreign’ goods,
concepts and culture closer. The result is the gradual
irrelevance of national borders. Consequently, regional
conflicts have even stronger global consequences while
foreign leaders impact domestic policy. An economic
slowdown in one region holds severe and immediate
consequences for the world. Cultures, phenomena such as
‘homegrown terrorism’ and epidemics such as SARS and Mad Cow
now flow around our inter-connected world with ease. New
technologies and innovative ideas now circle the world in
mere hours. Is the world made better by this new reality
enabled by an ancient phenomenon? This issue will explore
this in detail.
Issue 2:
The United Nations: Finding the Balance Between Duty and
Diplomacy.

The events of this past summer truly highlight the fragility
of contemporary peace and security. The crisis in the
Middle East posed a grave challenge for the international
community to react and resolve the potential of mass
humanitarian loss. The world looked to the United Nations
as the only legitimate multilateral organization that is
warranted with the authority to resolve the situation.
However, the Security Council lacked a decisiveness and
efficiency that was much required at the time. Nonetheless,
a resolution issued by the most powerful organ of the UN
effectively ceased hostilities in the region. This issue
looks at the United Nations as an indispensable institution
struggling to come to terms with the challenges of the
twenty-first century.
Issue 3:
International Development: Burden or a Promise?
Coming Soon
It has been over four decades since the international
community agreed on a collective pursuit of global
development and equality for all. However, in the world
today over one billion people live under the poverty line of
USD 1 per day. In light of this, certain governments have
continued to neglect the gravity of global poverty by
refusing to dedicate 0.7% of their national budgets to
development projects worldwide. While applauding the
efforts of individuals and organizations that have
contributed to the global development project, increased
dedication and commitment is required to fulfill the dream
of eliminating poverty one day. This issue explores
contemporary issues of poverty while investigating the void
between a promise once made and a dedication that appears
forgotten.
Issue 4:
Canadian Foreign Policy: A Need to be More than Just a Name.
To be
released March 30th
Over the past 60 years, successive Canadian governments have
pursued a liberal democratic policy that has kept our nation
in step with the United States, while carving a unique
Canadian position in world affairs. Our involvement in U.N.
peacekeeping roles and our effective neutrality has been
strong tenants of Canadian foreign policy. In response to
issues such as global terrorism that have risen to
prominence on the global agenda, Canada – like many western
democracies, has come under pressure to alter the priorities
on its foreign agenda. As emerging countries such as China
and India gain increasing prominence in world affairs,
Canada will come under increasing pressure to ensure that
its views are represented on the world scale. This issue
explores the achievements and challenges in Canada’s
attempts to define itself on the world stage.
