Model United Nations

Model United Nations conferences challenge students to take on the role of ambassadors of particular nations to the United Nations and its organizational bodies, in order to bring new light to global issues and the UN system. Students debate and then draft resolutions to guide international action on these weighty issues. Prior to the conference, delegates research the position of their country on the topics to be debated and draft position papers outlining them. While in session at the conference, delegates represent their countries and engage in debate with other delegates.

QIAA participates in a range of MUNs, ranging in size and skill level. MUNs can be an enormous learning experience into how the UN functions, as well as to develop personal debating and networking skills. Every student should have the opportunity to get involved in MUN and learn more about the international system.

QIAA delegates are not only playing the role of ambassadors at MUNs, they are also ambassadors of Queen's when participating off campus.

QIAA's first MUN for the 2007-2008 academic year, the McGill University Model United Nations, will take place from January 24th to 27th at McGill's downtown Montreal Campus

McMUN is Canada's premier university-level model United Nations simulation, bringing together around 1400 students annually.  For more information please refer to their website at http://www.mcmun.org/home.index.php

The second MUN event QIAA will be attending this year is Princeton University's Interactive Crisis Simulation (PICSim), which will take place from February 28th to March 2nd at Princeton's main campus in Princeton, New Jersey.

PICSim is unlike any other MUN conference. It is a simultaneous 11-committee crisis simulation. The committees all interact with each other; the actions of one are immediately known by all others. The committees are all small, either national cabinets or non-state actors. In the past, PICSim has simulated regions of the world including Central Asia, Central Africa, and most recently, the Middle East.

PICSim 2008 will focus on the horn of Africa, modeling the political, economic, and security dynamics of the region. As delegates you will take your place in national cabinets and a variety of sub-state organizations to tackle the issues of East Africa head on, in cooperation or conflict. Due to the continually shifting politics of the area, there will no doubt be shifting country/committee selection as the year goes on. For more information please refer to their website at http://modelun.princeton.edu/picsim/

The third, and final, MUN even of this year will be the New York National Model United Nations (NMUN) taking place from March 18th to 22nd at the Sheraton New York and the United Nations itself!

This is the first time Queens is attending NMUN and we are looking forward to the experience provided by a large, national conference, in a city that houses the United Nations itself. Due to its size, NMUN provides delegates with a wide range of committees to take part in with delegates from around the world. For more information please refer to their website at
