        What is an internship?

 

      Generally, internships are experiences where the intern gains a high level of

        job exposure in exchange for working for a limited salary. They are valuable

        ways to enter the field of international affairs for the first time and are often

        seen as the most effective way to bridge the gap between the no experience --

        no job dilemma.

 

        Are interns paid?

 

      Internships can be paid or unpaid. While some programs do allow for substantial

        remuneration, interns will often be covered in living costs, travel expenses, and

        health insurance.

 

        What is the Canadian Government's involvement with international

        internships?

 

      Since the government of Canada announced the Youth Employment Strategy in

        1997, the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT) has

        created a Youth International Internship Program (YIIP). This program has

        created a foundation of paid experiences in all areas of the globe. Further
