Summer Internship Program
Advocates for Children of New York (AFC) is a not-for-profit organization in New York City with a mission of ensuring that all children have access to quality public education. AFC’s work combines five strategies, including direct representation of individual children and parents, community education, public policy, litigation and information dissemination about the public schools. AFC works on behalf of children and youth who are at greatest risk of academic failure due to poverty, race, ethnicity, disability, homelessness, immigration status/limited English proficiency, or involvement in the child welfare or juvenile justice system.
Advocates for Children’s Summer Law Intern program is based on a clinical model. Interns work closely with clients throughout all stages of representation from intake through investigation to preparation and execution of administrative hearings regarding the provision of special education. The administrative hearings in special education cases, called impartial hearings, involve legal research, opening statements, direct and cross examination, and closing statements. Interns participating in these hearings will be closely supervised by AFC attorneys throughout the process. Interns placed at AFC may also have the opportunity to assist attorneys with work on one of AFC’s pending class action lawsuits or policy reform initiatives.
Responsibilities
Interns meet weekly for training sessions to learn about relevant law, regulations, cases and practices, as well as to review transcripts and case examples. Additionally, we arrange tours for interns to visit a variety of providers, evaluators and programs that we work with for our clients.
Qualifications
The internships are 10 weeks long and 40 hours a week. Although the internship is not paid, we will work with law school programs which fund or provide credit to law students. AFC is an affirmative action employer that actively seeks to recruit and retain a diverse staff and especially encourages applications from people of color, persons with disabilities, persons of diverse sexual orientations, gender identities or gender expressions and persons of diverse socioeconomic backgrounds

AFC works for equal educational opportunities, quality educational services, meaningful school reform, and reduction of school failure among New York City’s public school students. Law students or public policy / administration graduate students are needed. Interns will update digests of administrative decisions, research and prepare legal memoranda on education issues, and assist with individual cases. Excellent writing, research, and communication skills are required. Proficiency in a second language is required.
