These awards provide exposure to research for international development through program work and research under the guidance of an IDRC program staff member. Internships can be completed in the summer or be extended for up to 12 months. Approximately 50% of the internship is spent undertaking a research topic in the areas of social and economic policy, environmental management, information and communications technology or science. The other half will involve hands on experience in the field. The internship takes place at the main office in Ottawa or at one of the regional offices in Africa or Asia. There are 14 available positions each year.

IDRC's Student Employment Program (SEP 2008) provides an opportunity for college and university students to learn about the operations of IDRC and acquire relevant work experience in different fields through on-the-job training.
